3:51 pm on 21 January 2011

A doctor who admitted possessing child pornography has been ordered to carry out 160 hours of community work and undergo 18 months' intensive supervision.

Andrew Dunkley, 35, was training to be a radiologist and was sentenced in the Wellington District Court on Friday on six charges of possessing an objectionable publication.

More than 50,000 images of girls in explicit poses were found when police inspected Dunkley's computer last year.

His lawyer said they were at the very lowest end of the scale relating to objectionable images and did not show any sexual activity.

Judge Bruce Davidson said Dunkley had taken responsiblity for his actions and hoped it was possible for him to continue his medical career.

The Medical Council is also investigating Dunkley.
