NZ civil defence team returns from Australia

9:57 pm on 20 January 2011

The New Zealand civil defence team sent to Australia to help people affected by the floods has returned home.

Fifteen workers spent just under a fortnight doing clean-up and recovery work in Queensland.

The Government says the team gave up holiday time to help the flood victims.

And a second Red Cross flood relief team is on its way to Brisbane to help the city mop up.

The team of four paid staff will help to co-ordinate volunteers in the city.

They will replace another four-person team that has been helping for the past week, and are due back on Monday.

The New Zealand Red Cross International Operations Manager, Andrew McKie, says sending staff to Australia gives them the experience to cope with a disaster if one hits this country.
