Police trying to reduce numbers of careless arms offences

7:49 am on 20 January 2011

Police spend more than $100,000 per year to reduce the risks associated with firearm use.

Statistics show that each year about 30 people are killed, injured or have their lives endangered by someone discharging a firearm carelessly.

Inspector Joe Green says the Arms Code, which was revised in 2006, has very clear messages for people with firearms.

He says police are working to reduce the number of fatalities and injuries by educating license holders.
