Willis to get Olympic silver before home crowd

6:21 pm on 19 January 2011

Runner Nick Willis will be presented with his 1500m silver medal in February, the New Zealand Olympic Committee has confirmed.

It is the first and possibly only time an Olympic medal will be presented in New Zealand.

Willis finished third in the 1500m event at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, but was upgraded after gold medalist Rashid Ramzi of Bahrain was disqualified for doping.

When the medal arrived in New Zealand about six months ago, Willis said he would like to be presented with it in front of a strong home crowd.

He will take part in an international track meet at QEII Stadium in Christchurch on 26 February where he will compete in the 1500m.

Willis will try to secure a qualifying time for the World Championships in South Korea in August.
