Liquor ban around university during orientation

5:25 pm on 19 January 2011

For the first time, the Christchurch City Council will impose a liquor ban around Canterbury University during orientation week.

The ban will be in place 24 hours a day from 17-27 February and include all public areas bounded by Riccarton, Clyde, Creyke, Maidstone and Waimairi roads.

The ban does not apply to private property, including the University of Canterbury campus.

The council says it has been considering how to deal with alcohol-related problems in the suburbs around the university for some time.

Its regulatory committee also suggests that the council impose permanent liquor restrictions in the suburbs of Ilam and Riccarton.
