Vandalised carved posts now back up

Rotorua District Council hopes that improved security measures will prevent any repeat of vandalism that damaged two Maori pou (carved posts).

The pou, on State Highway 36 between Tauranga and Rotorua, had to be taken down in October, 10 days after being put up.

They had been vandalised with a chainsaw, but are now back up.

The carvings, owned by the Rotorua District Council, represent the Ngati Rangiwewehi and Ngai Te Rangi iwi.

Kaupapa Maori director Mauriora Kingi says he hopes the new security measures will deter another attack.
