Irrigation ban in central Hawkes Bay

8:28 am on 15 January 2011

The Hawke's Bay Regional Council has introduced an irrigation ban covering several waterways in the region.

The decision follows low rainfall in central Hawke's Bay and imposes restrictions on landholders who have resource consent to take water for irrigation.

The main waterway covered by the ban is the Waipawa River, which the council says is flowing below its minimum level of 2300 litres per second.

Some other rivers and streams in central Hawke's Bay are also covered by the ban.
