Rough ride as cruise ship dodges cyclone

7:07 pm on 15 January 2011

Hundreds of New Zealanders on a cruise in the South Pacific Ocean have had to endure stormy seas as their ship evaded the path of a tropical cyclone on Friday.

Cyclone Vania is moving across eastern New Caledonia after causing destruction in Vanuatu.

A P & O cruise ship carrying up to 1900 New Zealanders has managed to avoid the worst of the cyclone.

A spokesperson for the company, David Jones, says the ship has docked in Port Vila and passengers are safe and well.

Mr Jones says some itineraries have had to be altered but the cyclone has not delayed arrival times.
