End to free motorbike parking considered in capital

Free parking for scooter riders and motorcyclists could end in central Wellington.

Wellington City Council officers are suggesting the charges to raise revenue and to cope with an increase in the number of riders.

This would make Wellington the first city in New Zealand to charge motorbike parking fees.

Transport portfolio leader Andy Foster says council members will discuss the possible charges as they develop a draft budget, which will be finalised in early March.

There are between 400 - 500 motorbike parks in Wellington.

The Bikers Rights Organisation fears people will drive their cars into town rather than their motorbikes if the fees are introduced.
