No 1 seed David Ferrer and second seed Nicolas Almagro were pushed hard by their opponents before winning their quarterfinals in three sets on Thursday.
Spanish world No 7 Ferrer beat Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3 7-6 6-3.
He next faces ATP tour debutant Santiago Giraldo after the Colombian beat top Brazilian and tournament seventh seed Thomaz Bellucci 6-2 6-4.
Almagro, of Spain, was taken to the wire by French qualifier Adrian Mannarino, winning the first set in a tiebreak before losing the second the same way.
Almagro eventually wore down his opponent to take the match 7-6 6-7 6-2.
Defending champion John Isner from the United States is out of the tournament, after losing to Argentina's David Nalbandian 6-4 7-6.
