NZ MP seeking gumboots for Queensland

1:23 pm on 12 January 2011

A New Zealand Member of Parliament is urgently trying to source large quantities of gumboots to send to Queensland, where she says there is a desperate need for them.

Dunedin South MP Claire Curran (Labour) says she has received a request from a friend who is helping to coordinate a relief effort in Toowoomba, one of the worst flood areas.

She says there is a serious shortage of gumboots, mosquito nets and insect repellent in Australia at the moment.

Ms Curran says she is in talks with The Warehouse and Air New Zealand.

She says gumboots are a seasonal item and there are only a few hundred left in Australia.

Ms Curran says gumboots will be essential as flood waters recede and people begin cleaning-up.
