Summer Report: morning papers

7:34 am on 12 January 2011

All the morning papers are devoted to the floods in Queensland on Wednesday.

The New Zealand Herald devotes its entire front page to the Queensland floods - beginning with the story of a woman who was almost swept away by the wall of water that ripped through Toowoomba. She was hauled to safety by rescue workers - but many others were not so lucky.

There are reports of massive queues of traffic as people try to leave Brisbane before the waters hit there.

State Premier Anna Bligh is warning that the worst lies ahead - with a high tide threatening to push the levels above a record flood in 1974 which killed 14 people.

The Dominion Post has a photo of the dramatic rescue of two women caught in the flood waters.

The Press reports that entire families are believed to be among the missing following flash floods in the Lockyer Valley and in Toowoomba . Those who are left are describing it as a ghost town.

The coverage includes the stories of New Zealand expats - some of whom are confirmed to be OK and others who have families back here anxiously waiting to hear from them.

Two friends from Christchurch were stuck in a flooded shop north of Brisbane on Tuesday night, with the roads closed, no power and water starting to come in.

The Otago Daily Times says thunderstorms and more heavy rain are expected over southeast Queensland over the next two days. Three quarters of the state has been declared a disaster zone.
