Auckland litter problem 'overwhelming'

10:27 am on 10 January 2011

Council-employed contractors are overwhelmed by the amount of litter being dropped on Auckland's streets, parks and beaches, an environmental group says.

Waitemata Harbour Clean-up Trust founder Hayden Smith says much of the rubbish ends up in the ocean, and then washes up on the shore.

He says the trust itself has removed an extraordinary amount of litter from Auckland Harbour.

Mr Smith says the public must take responsibility for the problem and dispose of their rubbish appropriately.
