Boatie rescued after hitting rocks

4:28 pm on 5 January 2011

An Auckland boatie has been taken to hospital with a broken jaw after his eight-metre vessel hit rocks in Waitemata Harbour overnight and began to sink.

The Coastguard says he was knocked on the head and made a distress call on his marine radio.

It says the man did everything right; setting off a parachute flare, activating his emergency radio beacon and staying in contact with rescuers using a marine radio.
