Railway holiday work half over

5:00 pm on 4 January 2011

Work on the Wellington rail system during the holiday period has passed the halfway mark.

All lines were shut from Boxing Day as part of an upgrade of the network costing $500 million.

Crews have been replacing points and doing maintenance on overhead lines, tracks and signals, as well as double-tracking between Plimmerton and Waikanae.

Services resumed on Monday on the Johnsonville line, the Hutt Valley and on the main trunk line as far as Porirua.

Crews are now increasing the size of tunnels between Porirua and Waikanae and double-tracking from Mackays Crossing to Waikanae. That section of track is due to reopen on Monday.

The upgrade will be finished in June.
