NIWA will name last year's sunniest place in New Zealand in about 10 days.

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research will name last year's sunniest place in New Zealand in about 10 days' time.

NIWA has about 100 climate stations around the country which daily measure sunshine hours.

Climate scientist Andrew Tait says the usual suspects are the front-runners: Blenheim, Nelson, Whakatane and Tauranga.

Nelson was the sunniest place in 2009 ahead of Tauranga, with Blenheim in third place.
