Fire danger rising in many regions

6:13 am on 4 January 2011

The Fire Service expects to be kept busy as the fire risk grows in many regions.

The fire danger in Northland, northern Hawke's Bay, North Canterbury and Wairarapa ranges from moderate to very high.

On Monday, crews spent several hours battling a scrub fire north of Masterton.

National rural fire officer Murray Dudfield says there could be more such blazes as the regions dry out.

He says those fires also take longer to contain and extinguish because what they are burning is so dry.

Mr Dudfield says the fire danger in many regions will very quickly reach very high and extreme if there is no rain soon.
