A handcuffed man is on the run in Hamilton after escaping from police early on Sunday.

Police say Martin Uta Tahau has a history of violence, carries firearms and should not be approached.

Two officers were responding to a domestic dispute about 2.45am and were in the process of arresting Mr Tahau when they were attacked by a woman at the house.

The officers suffered minor injuries but were able to arrest the woman for assault.

Senior Sergeant Kent Holdsworth says Mr Tahau fled the scene with handcuffs attached to one wrist.

Mr Tahau is described as Maori, 31 years old and about 1.83 metres tall.
