5:22 pm on 24 December 2010

Police are calling for calm on the roads as people head away for Christmas and holidays.

The official holiday road toll period, which will run through until 5 January, began at 4pm on Friday.

Thirteen people died during over the same period last holidays, and a further 67 were seriously injured.

Policing spokesperson Paula Rose says traffic will be particularly busy this evening in certain places.

Ms Rose says police will ticket any motorist caught doing more than five kilometres over the speed limit.
