Police in Napier say the examination of a house in the suburb of Maraenui, where a five-year-old girl was found dead in her bed, will continue into Wednesday.
A 24-year-old man arrested and charged with assaulting the girl was granted interim name suppression when he made a brief appearance in the Napier District Court on Tuesday.
He was remanded in custody by consent until his next court appearance in three weeks.
Inspector Kevin Kalff says a team of 14 police and two ESR forensic staff are investigating the girl's suspicious death.
He says a post-mortem to determine how she died will be carried out in Palmerston North on Wednesday.
The girl was found dead in her bed at 1.50am on Tuesday by family at their home in Riverbend Rd. Police were called and a man who lived at the house was arrested shortly after.
