Council and board against new Wiri prison

12:50 pm on 18 December 2010

Auckland Council and Manurewa Local Board are strongly opposed to a proposed new 1000-bed prison.

The Department of Corrections wants to build the new men's prison next to a women's prison in Wiri.

The department had called submissions on the proposal and more than 50 had been received by the deadline on Friday.

Board chair Daniel Newman says its submission reflects the feedback from the community.

He says they are concerned about the adverse impact the prison will have on the area.
