A woman who drove at speed for 13 kilometres with her former partner clinging to the bonnet of her car in Taranaki has had her conviction for murder quashed.

Cindi Fairburn's former partner and father of her daughter, Darin Maxwell, died after her car that he was clinging to crossed onto the wrong side of the road and struck another vehicle in August 2007.

The driver of the vehicle was badly injured, while and a third motorist was slightly injured.

Ms Fairburn was convicted of murdering Mr Maxwell, but that conviction has been overturned by the Supreme Court.

A new trial has been ordered.

However, the reasons the Supreme Court gave for this have been suppressed.
