Cemetery opens new area for bigger caskets

A South Auckland cemetery plans to respond to the obesity epidemic by opening up an area with larger plots.

Manukau Memorial Gardens says it is struggling to deal with larger clients and is also considering a bigger cremator.

Cemetery manager Noeleen Mudgway says more and more bereaved families are approaching it with relatives who are obese.

She says that makes providing a dignified service, and an affordable price, very difficult.

Auckland funeral director Nick Bakulich says the problem is affecting the population of the whole city, but appears to be more common in the Pacific Island community.
