Internet company Google is apologising for gathering information about New Zealanders following an investigation by the Privacy Commissioner.
The company sent out vehicles to map the streets of the country in 2007 but also ended up gathering publicly broadcast WiFi data.
Privacy Commissioner Marie Shroff says it was not good enough that Google failed to tell people what it was doing, or what the information would be used for.
Ms Shroff says it breached privacy laws and the company must ensure it does not happen again.
Google says the collection of some of the data was a mistake for which it sincerely apologises to all New Zealanders.
