Drivers 'consider boycott' of Wellington bus route

The Wellington branch of the Tramways Union says it can't rule out a driver boycott of the city's new multi-million dollar bus route.

Three pedestrians have been hit by buses since the former pedestrian-only Manners Mall re-opened to buses just over a week ago.

A woman suffered extensive head injuries in the most serious incident, on Thursday.

Tramways Union Wellington branch president Nick Kelly says an extensive pedestrian education campaign by Wellington City Council is not good enough.

He says drivers are considering boycotting the route, and want permanent safety railings installed to prevent jaywalking.

Wellington mayor Celia Wade-Brown says it's been found people climb over barriers, and then have nowhere to go.
