Charity donations disclosed

More than $700 million was donated to charities in New Zealand in the past year.

Figures have been issued by the Charities Commission for the period to the end of October.

In that time, registered charities reported more than $10.5 billion in income from trading activities, Government grants, fees and donations.

Of this amount, $8.2 billion was spent on charitable activities.

The charities also reported an average of 1.1 million volunteer hours each week.

About 390,000 people volunteered their time to a charity during the year.
