Mountain clubs against glacier by-law

10:18 am on 3 December 2010

The Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand says a coroner's call for a bylaw restricting access to Franz Josef glacier is inappropriate.

Coroner Richard McElrea recommended a by-law to stop people getting too close to the face of glaciers on the West Coast after brothers Ashish and Akshay Miranda died in January 2009.

Ashish, 24, and Akshay, 22, ignored warning signs and crossed safety ropes to get close to the face of Fox Glacier when it collapsed, burying them in tonnes of ice.

Federation president Richard Davies says there are already warning signs and a barrier, which are enough to stop people getting too close to the glacier.

He says a bylaw, enforced by security guards issuing fines, would be overkill.

Mr Davies says if people heed the warning signs, their trips to the glacier will be 100% safe.
