Insurance companies get tougher on 'P' lab claims

9:24 am on 3 December 2010

Insurance companies are introducing tougher criteria for landlords making claims on residential properties affected by methamphetamine ('P') labs.

The Insurance Council says insurance companies have paid between $5 - $10 million in the past 12 months, on claims relating to 'P' lab damage.

It says that could be as much as 60% more than two to three years ago.

The council says that before paying, insurance companies will now ask property owners to provide evidence that they have taken adequate precautions, such as vetting tenants and carrying out regular property inspections.
