Woman seriously injured on new bus route

10:31 pm on 2 December 2010

A woman in her 20s has been seriously injured after being hit by a bus in central Wellington.

The accident happened on the corner of Manners Street, Taranaki Street and Courtenay Place about 7pm on Thursday.

It is the third such accident since the Wellington City Council removed a long-established pedestrian mall in the central city and redirected traffic in opposite directions on several adjacent streets.

The decision was part of a council plan to reintroduce buses all along Wellington's so-called Golden Mile which dominates the central business district.

But critics insist it will make the city less friendly to pedestrians.

The new bus route was officially opened on Monday.

A woman was moderately injured when she was hit by a bus on Tuesday afternoon, while another person was slightly hurt but did not need treatment in a similar incident on Monday.
