Major airports checked for runway light fault

12:24 pm on 30 November 2010

Airways Corporation is investigating whether other major airports could be at risk of a runway lights fault which disrupted travel plans of about 2000 people over the weekend.

A cable failure at Auckland International Airport on Saturday evening triggered travel chaos, with 22 flights in and out of the city diverted or delayed.

The Airways Corporation says the cable may have been damaged by lightning strikes.

Operations manager Lewis Jenkins says wiring for Wellington and Christchurch airports is being checked for risk areas, though he says both experience significantly fewer lightning strikes than Auckland.

Mr Jenkins says the damaged cable is being examined by investigators.
