Police in Christchurch are appealing for witnesses to a sexual assault in the city on Saturday night.
They say a 20-year-old woman was attacked at about midnight as she walked along Hereford Street, between Fitzgerald Avenue and Stanmore Road.
The man broke off his attack when another person neared the scene, allowing the woman to escape.
Police say the alleged attacker and the woman were located soon after.
The man will appear in the Christchurch District Court on Monday.
