Kapiti residents determined to fight expressway

Residents affected by plans for a major roading development on the Kapiti Coast say they are determined to fight it.

The Transport Agency has revealed two options for an expressway Mackays Crossing to Peka Peka, and consultation with affected homeowners starts on Sunday.

Up to 60 properties may have to be demolished to make way for the four-lane road, which would cut through the towns of Raumati, Paraparaumu and Waikanae.

A Waikanae resident, Marie O'Sullivan, who could lose her home, says that there is still time to force a rethink but that no one is listening at the moment.

She says people feel their concerns are being ignored, and there is increasing cynicism because the consultation was delayed by three weeks and will now take place over the holiday period.
