A North Shore Shore company has been ordered to pay $90,000 after an employee was killed while unloading sheets of glass.

Sharpeye Ltd was sentenced in North Shore District Court on Thursday and fined $30,00 as well as being ordered to pay reparations of $60,000.

In April, Jinsong Song, 42, and other employees were unloading sheets of glass when a 200-kilogram sheet fell on him.

The Department of Labour described the incident as horrific and entirely avoidable.

It says Sharpeye Ltd should have made sure the sheets were packed in such a way that a machine such as a forklift could have been used to unload the glass.
