A man has been charged with the manslaughter last month of a woman at Te Horo on the Kapiti Coast.

Kyle James, 37, entered no plea during his appearance in Levin District Court on Thursday morning.

Shelagh Cotter, 69, was picnicking by the side of the road when she was struck by Mr James' car.

Police say Mr James was three times over the legal alcohol limit at the time.

He was granted bail and will appear in court again next month.

Mrs Cotter's friend, Marilyn Jeffery, 62, was seriously injured in the incident.

Mrs Jeffery's husband, Don Jeffery, was in court and said his wife was still very fragile. He said he was disappointed Mr James did not enter a plea.
