A man who bludgeoned a woman to death in her home in Christchurch has pleaded guilty to murder.

Gaynor White, 62, was killed at her Huntsbury property during a burglary in February.

In the High Court at Christchurch on Friday, Shaun Timothy Skilling, 22, pleaded guilty to four charges including murder, burglary and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.

The court heard that Skilling drove Mrs White's car around the city afterwards, telling associates that he had borrowed it from his grandmother.

He told one associate he had hit a woman on the head with a hammer and another that he thought he had gone too far and would be going to jail.

Skilling was remanded in custody and will be sentenced in February next year.
