The Government has cleared a way for funding high profile road safety projects for the next decade.

It has confirmed the funding in a 10 year plan by an amendment to the policy statement on land transport funding.

Moves such as the introduction of alcohol interlocks for repeat drunk drivers and conducting two years of research into the blood alcohol limit, will be funded by the Transport Agency through a new class, known as road user safety.

Transport Minister Steven Joyce says between $25 - $55 million annually has been allocated.
