Secondary teachers to continue strikes

5:58 pm on 14 November 2010

Secondary teachers will resume strike action in the coming week.

Students are asked to stay home during the strikes which will affect Year 9 students on Thursday with Year 10 students affected the following week and Year 9 again the week after.

Members of the Post Primary Teachers' Association are taking the action over stalled collective agreement negotiations with the Ministry of Education.

They suspended a strike last week so talks could continue.

But the two sides failed to reach agreement after four days.

The union says it will survey staff about intensified industrial action next year.

Meanwhile, primary school teachers have begun a low-level campaign over their pay claim.

The collective agreements for primary and secondary principals are also unresolved.
