Zespri calls for effort to eradicate vine disease

9:15 am on 13 November 2010

Kiwifruit marketer Zespri wants the Ministry of Agriculture to try to eradicate the vine disease PSA, despite the technical difficulty.

Agriculture and Biosecurity Minister David Carter says it is highly unlikely the disease, now confirmed in three orchards, can be eradicted.

Zespri chief executive Lain Jager says it has told the Minister it understands the technical difficulty of eradicating an airborne bacteria.

However the says the company still really wants eradication to be given its best shot, or at least for consideration to be given to containing the disease within some areas.
