Wellington looks set to keep hosting the international rugby sevens tournament for at least the next five years.

Other cities had been considering seeking the rights to the tournament, but Auckland has decided not to bid.

Christchurch and Dunedin are also both understood to have decided against it.

Wellington City Council's events spokesperson, John Morrison, says it is great news that other cities are not bidding for the event, which has been held in the capital each February since 2000.

The New Zealand Rugby Union says it will make a final decision on the venue before the end of the year.
