Drink-drivers deluded, says Automobile Association

Drivers are deluded if they think they can get away with drink-driving, says the Automobile Association.

A survey by the Transport Ministry shows that 40% of New Zealanders think there is only a small risk of being caught while driving over the legal breath alcohol limit.

The survey of more than 1600 people also found that 20% of drivers admitted getting behind the wheel while slightly intoxicated in the past year.

Association spokesperson Mike Noon says there is a group of people who simply do not care about the dangers of drinking and driving.

But Mr Noon says that, despite what the survey respondents think, police are very good at catching drink-drivers.
