Navy offers to train its largest group of Australian officers

The New Zealand Navy is hosting Australian naval cadets - because the ships they would normally be training on are laid up for million of dollars worth of repairs.

The 89 Australian trainee officers have arrived to serve on HMNZS Canterbury in the largest-ever such exchange.

Their usual ships, HMAS Manoora and HMAS Kanimbla, are out of service until next year for seaworthiness checks.

The New Zealand Navy's captain of fleet operational support, Dean McDougall, says such a large group was not able to be accommodated before the Canterbury came into service.

The recruits will sail in the ship to Townsville to pick up New Zealand Army troops, and back to New Zealand again.
