The secondary school teachers' union says it will return to pay talks with the Ministry of Education on Monday.
But the Post Primary Teachers Association will not yet call off the strike action it has planned for Thursday.
Collective agreement negotiations have been stalled since the middle of October when three days of talks resulted in a ministry offer including a 2.4% pay rise over two years and a one-off payment of $1000.
PPTA president Kate Gainsford says informal talks now indicate there could be progress on three key points - remuneration, class size and the conditions under which teachers can be called back to school during the holidays.
The talks will be the last chance to reach a settlement that can be ratified by the union's members before the end of the year, she says.
