A Department of Conservation worker reported missing near Hanmer Springs in North Canterbury has been found.

DoC says the man failed to return from the back country at 4pm on Friday and a personal locator beacon was activated about 7pm.

Maritime New Zealand's Rescue Co-ordination Centre confirmed that police and DoC staff had located the man in the Waiau River area.

The staff member had activated the locator beacon after encountering snow and worsening conditions in the area.

A helicopter search of the area had failed to locate him.

The man is being treated at Hanmer Springs for mild hypothermia on Friday night.
