The founder of the New Zealand record label Flying Nun, has admitted driving while intoxicated.

Roger Shepherd appeared in the Wellington District Court on one charge of driving with excess blood alcohol.

The court heard Shepherd was stopped at a vehicle checkpoint in July and a subsequent test revealed a blood alcohol level of 139. The legal limit is 80.

His lawyer, Sandy Baigent, said it was a lapse of judgement and 20 years had passed since he'd last faced such a charge.

Shepherd was convicted and fined $700, ordered to pay court costs and disqualified from driving for six months.
