NZ trio in Indonesia found

12:29 pm on 5 November 2010

Three young Northland men who have been out of contact since the Indonesian tsunami have been found safe and well.

Ben Gavin-Young, David Machin and Ryan Irissarri, all from Kerikeri, have been sailing and surfing off Sumatra for several months.

They had not been heard from since making contact the day before a 7.7 magnitude earthquake and tsunami hit off the west coast of Sumatra on 25 October.

David Machin's stepmother Sorrel Bovett says the past three days have been the most tense, so the news is a tremendous relief.

Ms Bovett says she would like them now to get a working satellite phone.

Ben Gavin-Young's mother, Cheryl, told Morning Report the families have confirmed with boat crews in the area that the men are safe.

Ms Gavin-Young said they were always confident the trio were all right, but having confirmation has given everyone a lot more peace.
