Hamilton police have arrested a man after a series of events that left a victim with serious head injures and an officer in hospital.

The police were called out after several burglaries in the east and north of the city early Thursday morning.

A resident went to check out a noise and was confronted by three men in balaclavas trying to steal his car.

Shots were fired from what police believe was an airgun and the resident was hit on the head with a weapon.

The stolen car was driven off at speeds of up to 160km/h before the police eventually boxed it in.

But when a constable tried to get in and arrest the driver, he was thrown clear, and the car speed off.

It was finally stopped, and the driver is facing a variety of charges.

The constable has minor to moderate injuries.
