Members of the secondary teachers union refused to teach nearly 60,000 Year 9 students on Tuesday.
The Post Primary Teachers Association is holding a series of rolling strikes in a campaign for a pay increase of 4%.
Strikes are scheduled to continue until the end of the school term, with the next affecting Year 10 students on Thursday next week.
