Commission finalises $2b tertiary funding agreements

8:46 am on 3 November 2010

The Tertiary Education Commission is finalising funding agreements for nearly $2 billion in tertiary education and industry training subsidies.

The agreements are the investment plans for the country's 31 public tertiary institutions and 39 industry training organisations.

They include government decisions that reduce funding for polytechnics and industry training organisations, and increase funding for universities.

They have been under negotiation for several months already but institutions will not know for sure the outcome until the commission's board has approved each plan.

Schools that provide adult and community education and hundreds of private tertiary education providers also have investment plans.

But those will be approved by the commission's staff, not its board, and in most cases that will not happen until December.
