Avatar director James Cameron has told a Wellington visual effects studio he hopes to bring production of the film's sequels to New Zealand.

Earlier this year, Weta Digital won an Academy Award for its work on Avatar, the highest-grossing movie to date.

Weta Digital director Joe Letteri says he has been in preliminary discussions with Mr Cameron's studio about the sequels.

"I know he had a great experience working here in New Zealand, and especially shooting in Wellington.

"We talked a lot about the virtual production, but he has said that he would like to come back here and shoot these films in Wellington, so we're hoping that he's able to do that."

Mr Letteri says though final confirmation of Weta's involvement could be a year away, the project could employ up to 1000 people in the capital.
