An MP has described how she fought to save the life of a woman who was shot while camping near Turangi.

Rosemary Margaret Ives, 25, died after being shot by a hunter on Friday night.

National Taupo MP Louise Upston was with a police patrol car on Friday night when the patrol was called to the camping site.

Ms Upston told Morning Report that she assisted by performing CPR, with the woman's partner.

She said it was clear when she arrived that the woman's wounds were substantial.

She says the woman's partner did a fantastic job at leading the rescue efforts during the very traumatic experience.

A Hamilton man, 25, has been charged with careless use of a firearm and is due to appear in the Taupo District Court on Wednesday.
